New Workshop.........Stitch a felt mobile cover!

Just made myself a mobile phone cover out of my hand dyed felt....intend to teach this as a workshop coming soon............

At the moment I am converting the dining room in my house, in orderto have it fully set up to teach in.

One off Tweed patchwork scarf....

I wanted to create a gift for my dad for my parents wedding anniversary. 

So a scarf came to mind!

He loves wool and tweed, so I felt this would be an ideal medium to use.  Its masculine and yet can still be styled to be creative.

I chose to make the scarf two sided to give it a thick feel. 

On one side I decided to use one fabric; for this I chose a lovely mustard brown, lighter weight wool fabric.  (That I had bought years ago , with the desire to make a dress for myself...yet it never happened..to thought it could be put to good use in another way!)

Then for the other side, I chose to create a patchwork look; cutting out squares of various tweed fabrics, some bought a while ago...just waiting for me to use them...whilst others were bought at the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate this year........for this purpose!

I wanted to make the scarf really special, so have made a hexagon patchwork piece, in three parts on one end, to finish the look.

Overall I am very happy with the result!

One off silk velvet scarf...made as a gift.

After making one of these for myself, my mum requested one as an wedding anniversary gift this year.  So here it is!

I first cut out a piece of undyed silk velvet, then hand dyed this; painting the dyes on to get the effect I desired.

Then I chose some vintage Liberty Print fabric that I had stored away, and stitched these together, to make a two sided scarf.

I wanted to add a bit of detail, so made a heart out of patchwork.

As seen, I have published quite a few images; as this is a more one off piece I wanted to portray it well.

Close ups have been included to show the patchwork design etc.

The Harrogate Knit and Stitch show.......I am published!

I made my way to the embroiderers guild stand at the Harrogate show...to see if the Issue of 'Stitch!' magazine that I am featured in was out...and it was!  Very exciting stuff!

So heres a very emotional me, clutching the magazine.....

Another example of work in progress.  I like this piece, as its somthing thats easy to take everywhere (and I do, with the best of intentions)! 

This piece was made by first space dying some pure cotton material, and then free hand stitching ontop (I refused to actually draw anything onto the fabric first) so any lines that look a little leaning tower of Pisa (ish) are pure part of the art...ok?!

Anyway, heres the work in progress....and the watercolour painting (which inspired me to stitch this) that I produced whist sitting on a wet step; in the pouring rain; on a wet St Louis isle in Paris (The island slap bang in the middle of Paris..famous for it's ice cream(which I was also eating at the time))

When I do get these "Work in Progress" pieces finished, I must upload them, so results are seen too.

With a feather in her hat..........

I have decided to try and add a few things to my blog that are work in progress pieces, rather than just finished pieces.

That way I can show how I really work...........

I decided for the Knitting and Stitching show, I wanted to add a feather to a hand felted hat I designed and made.............  Heres the hat, with me wearing it.  And the feather, done with free machine embroidery...a work in progress!

So tonights job, before leaving for Harrogate Knitting and Stitching show (Nov 2012) first thing in the morning.....you know what my job is...sew the feather to the hat...with pearls added?

We shall see.

The torn umbrella girl - Free hand machine embroidery

One of my recent Free Hand Machine Embroidery pieces.

Based on a poem I wrote, which turned into a watercolour painting, which turned into a large textile piece, which also turned into a Torn Umbrella Girl doll...and then this....a machine emboidery piece, based on her face!

Think the poem may have had a tad of an effect on me....

Anyway, here she is.  I first hand paint-dyed pure cotton, and then used this as a basis on which to stitch.  I based her face on the watercolour, (as seen).

I then worked on the piece after machine emboidering it, using hand stitching and beading to finish her.

I added more glittery threads to portray glints of colour in her hair.

I decided at this time not to show her with a hat...I wanted to show off her ginger red pink orange hair.....

So...heres my newest addition to my girls...a bride doll.

I am not going to say much about her, as she was made with a competition in mind, thus I dont want to break any rules! 

Anyway, she is made from paper, cloth, wool, silk and a 'Laduree' round box.

Its funny, some images of her make me laugh....!

New workshops for next year

Workshops I am Teaching in Newcastle

I have just booked to teach two workshops, at Newcastle Arts Centre, on Westgate Road in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The first one will be on the 17th of November at 11am, for one hour.

Bag commission for my Aunt...

I was commisoned to make a bag for my Aunt; for my cousins wedding coming up in october.  It is a hand painted pure silk bag, with a pure silk lining.

I have made a felt lining inside, so that the bag keeps its shape.  To finish I have added a button, covered in the same silk as the bag, and a machined loop. 

A wrist strap, made from tweed and velvet has been added, so that my aunt has the option of using that too; whilst at the wedding.

I have decorated the bag with subtle gathers on the flap; five in total.

I am rather pleased with the result...........here are some images of the piece!

My hand dyed and felted bags.............

 Here are a few examples of my work, this time bags...........I create many various styles and sizes; but here are a few!

Below, as you can see, bags have various colour themes etc, the one to the left has a handle, to make it easy to carry; whilst the one to the right is a tote, hand bag.

The wools for each bag are first dyed to my colour choice.  Then each bag is made using a seamless technique.  I use a mold to "felt" the bag, so that a strong bag is made, without any seams! 

Details are then added, such as hand felted flowers, a button fastening, or simply a handle, depending on the look I want to create!
